The Vicar of Baghdad and his Pelikan

The Reverend, Canon, Dr Andrew White has, over the years, been a pivotal figure in the fight for peace and religious tolerance in the Middle East. Having spent his early career practising anaesthetics, he moved into Theology in the 1990s and was appointed a canon of Coventry Cathedral in 1998.

It was in subsequent years Canon White utilised his pastoral acumen in the promotion of reconciliation in (mainly) religious conflicts across the globe. His work drew him towards the Middle East, namely Iraq, and he had soon earned the moniker, ‘The Vicar of Baghdad.’

Pelikan Fountain Pen Nibs - Italic & Oblique | Pelikan by Pure Pens

Pelikan Fountain Pen Nibs - Italic & Oblique

Historically, Pelikan's nibs had a square tip which means they gave a good line variation when writing - a little bit italic. If you are left handed, there is a good chance that you hold the pen in the ‘wrap around’ grip to prevent the side of your palm from smudging the words you have just written before the ink dries. When the different hold is used, the nib would not sit flat on its smooth edge and often would dig into the page on one of its sharp edges - not good! It would make the nib feel scratchy, write inconsistently and sometimes flick ink as it jumped when the edge lost its grip.

Start of Niche selling Pelikan Pens | Pelikan by Pure Pens

Start of Niche selling Pelikan Pens

Niche Pens have been selling Pelikan fountain pens and inks for over a decade. We discovered Pelikan by accident when looking for another make of pen, which is the market leader in the expensive pen domain. As a fountain pen user throughout school, when GCSEs had been finished and results were in, a pen was sought as a congratulations gift. We bought a used said Pelikan competitor from an auction website and when it arrived in the post after a couple of days, it was not as good as was expected for its value.

Fountain Pen Cartridge & Converter Fitting Guide | Pelikan by Pure Pens

Fountain Pen Cartridge & Converter Fitting Guide

The table below has been created by us to demonstrate to our customers which brands have cartridges and converters that are interchangable between them. I.e. a Pelikan International Standard will also fit a pen the same way an International Standard Diamine would.

However, all the brands where the cartridges and converters are Manufacturer's Specific - They will ONLY fit their own brand pens. For example, you would not be able to fit a Lamy cartridge in a Sheaffer pen.

Pelikan Fountain Pen & Nib Sizes | Pelikan by Pure Pens

Pelikan Fountain Pen & Nib Sizes

Our most popular type of pen is a fountain pen and so we have put together a size comparison of the fountain pens from the the Epoch, Pura, Souveran and Ductus ranges.

In the above comparison, it is important to note that the M600 in the centre could be considered a 'normal' sized pen. The M405 and Epoch above it are smaller than average, but become normal sized when the cap is taken off and 'posted' on the other end of the pen to write.

Pelikan Hanover Factory Visit | Pelikan by Pure Pens

Pelikan Hanover Factory Visit

A couple of years ago, Ross and I flew to Hanover, the historic headquarters of Pelikan and capital of the federal region of Lower Saxony in Northern Germany. We were given a very comprehensive program of activities for the following day which was kindly arranged by a Pelikan representative from the United Kingdom and the director of European Marketing at Pelikan.

Our hotel was the Pelikan Sheraton, a very interesting place indeed, being located within the original Pelikan manufacturing factory in Hanover.

Visit Our Shop in South Wales | Pelikan by Pure Pens

Visit Our Shop in South Wales

We have been selling online since 2004 and have customers all over the world, but just because we are predominately an online mail-order shop, we do welcome people coming in person to see and test out pens and inks they are interested in buying.

Our office is NOT a warehouse with shelves stacked to the ceiling and because we are relaxed and not in a city centre, it may just be the perfect place to come and look at pens!
