Which Pelikan Pen Should I Start With?

So you've decided to take the plunge into the world of Pelikan fountain pens; excellent choice. Pelikan has been crafting exceptional writing instruments since 1838, and their pens are renowned for their quality, reliability, and that satisfying piston-filling mechanism. But with so many models to choose from, where do you begin?

Here's our guide to finding your perfect first Pelikan.

Start with Your Budget

Pelikan's range spans from accessible entry-level pens to serious luxury pieces. Here's a quick overview:

  • Under £200: Pelikan M200/M205. The ideal starting point
  • £300-£400: Pelikan M400/M405. Step up in size and prestige
  • £300-£400: Pelikan M600/M605. A mid-size classic
  • £500+: Pelikan M800 / M1000. For those who want the best

The Best First Pelikan: M200 or M205

For most beginners, we recommend starting with the Pelikan M200 or M205. Here's why:

  • It's a genuine piston-filler, you get the full Pelikan experience
  • The nib is smooth and forgiving, ideal for those new to fountain pens
  • It's compact and lightweight, comfortable for long writing sessions
  • The price is approachable, so you can explore without a large commitment

The M205 is the same pen but comes in more striking colour options, often with a matching or contrasting nib. If you want something that looks as good as it writes, go for the M205.

Ready to Go Bigger? Try the M400

If you're already comfortable with fountain pens and want something with a bit more presence, the Pelikan M400 is a beautiful step up. It's slightly larger than the M200, with a more refined look and a wider range of nib options. The striped resin barrel is a Pelikan signature and looks stunning on the desk.

Nib Size: Where to Start

For beginners, we almost always recommend a Medium (M) nib. It's the most forgiving, not too fine (which can catch on paper) and not too broad (which uses a lot of ink). Once you know what you like, you can explore Fine, Broad, or even italic nibs.

Our Recommendation

If you're new to fountain pens: Pelikan M205 in your favourite colour, Medium nib. Fill it with Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue and enjoy one of the best writing experiences available at any price.

If you're upgrading from another brand: Pelikan M400, Medium or Fine nib. You'll immediately notice the quality difference.
