Pelikan Spare Nibs: Why Interchangeable Nibs Are a Game Changer

One of the most underrated features of Pelikan fountain pens is something that many owners never discover: the nibs are interchangeable. On Pelikan Souveran pens of the same size, you can swap the nib unit from one pen to another in seconds, without tools. This single feature transforms the way you can use and enjoy your pens.

How Does Nib Swapping Work?

On Pelikan Souveran pens, the nib and feed are housed in a single unit that screws into the grip section of the pen. To remove it, you simply unscrew the nib unit by hand. To fit a different nib, you screw the new one in. The whole process takes about ten seconds.

This means that if you own a Pelikan M400, you can buy a spare M400 nib unit in a different size and switch between them depending on what you are writing. One pen, multiple writing experiences.

Which Pens Are Compatible?

Nib units are interchangeable within the same size range. M400 nibs fit M400 pens, M600 nibs fit M600 pens, and so on. You cannot swap a M400 nib into an M800, as the sizes are different.

This applies to the full Souveran range: M400, M600, M800, and M1000.

Why Is This So Useful?

  • Try different nib sizes without buying a new pen each time
  • Switch between inks by keeping different nib units filled with different colours
  • Replace a damaged nib quickly and easily without sending the pen away for repair
  • Upgrade your nib as your preferences develop

What Nib Sizes Are Available?

Pelikan spare nibs are available in Extra Fine, Fine, Medium and Broad. This gives you a huge range of writing experiences from a single pen body.

A Practical Example

Many Pelikan owners keep their M800 fitted with a Medium nib for everyday writing, and have a spare Broad nib unit for when they want a more expressive line. Switching takes seconds and costs a fraction of buying a second pen.
