A Brief History of Pelikan: 185 Years of Craftsmanship

Few brands in the world of writing instruments can match Pelikan's heritage. Founded in 1838, the company has been at the forefront of pen making for nearly two centuries, combining German engineering precision with a genuine passion for the art of writing.

1838: The Beginning

Pelikan was founded in Hanover, Germany, by Carl Hornemann. The company initially produced paints, inks, and other writing materials rather than pens themselves. The iconic pelican logo, inspired by a medieval symbol of nurturing and care, was adopted early and has remained central to the brand's identity ever since.

1929: The First Pelikan Fountain Pen

It was not until 1929 that Pelikan produced its first fountain pen, the model 100. What set it apart immediately was its piston-filling mechanism, which allowed writers to fill the pen directly from an ink bottle by turning a knob at the end of the barrel. This was a significant innovation at the time and remains the defining feature of Pelikan pens today.

The Souveran Range

In 1982, Pelikan launched the Souveran range, which would become the brand's most celebrated line. The Souveran pens combined the classic piston-filling mechanism with premium materials, two-tone gold nibs, and the distinctive striped resin barrels that are now instantly recognisable. The range has been expanded and refined over the decades but remains true to its original character.

Innovation and Special Editions

Throughout its history, Pelikan has continued to innovate, introducing new materials, nib sizes, and designs. The brand's special edition and limited release pens, including the extraordinary Maki-e collaborations with Japanese lacquer artists, have made Pelikan a favourite among collectors worldwide.

Pelikan Today

Pelikan pens are still made in Germany, and the brand's commitment to quality and craftsmanship remains unchanged. Each pen is a product of decades of refinement, and the piston-filling mechanism that Pelikan pioneered nearly a century ago is still considered one of the finest ink delivery systems ever devised.
